Lions Come Back from 2 down to beat Rustlers.
The Consolation Final featured the Lakeland Rustlers and the Ambrose Lions. The First point of the game was a long rally going over the net 5 times before Lakeland was able to score. The second was a quick 3 contact side out from the Lions who held serve on a block going up 2-1. The Lions were able to explode out to a 6-2 lead with the help of an ace and some strong defensive play. Ambrose added another before losing serve, but carved a 4 point advantage early. The Rustlers saw this and quickly started to turn play around in their favor. Getting hot later in the early stages of the set, Lakeland worked their way to a 14-11 lead forcing the Lions to take a timeout. The Rustlers were able to hold on to their small advantage as the score neared the late stages. Down 16-20, the Lions bench took their second timeout quickly to try and swing the momentum before it was too late. Making up ground the Lions pushed hard to even the set but it was too little too late as the Rustlers took a first set victory 25-22
The second set started with the Rustlers holding serve for 2 quick points right out of the gate. Madison Blain followed it up with an Ace. 2 Ambrose attacking errors and the Rustlers opened up a 5-0 lead forcing the Lions to burn an early timeout. The Rustlers went up 9-0 before the Lions could put their first on the board. They followed it quickly with a second, but the damage was already done. The Lions did not roll over, and started to slowly chip away. The Rustlers were able to once again take control and re established their 9 point lead off 3 straight, 15-6. The Rustlers did not take their foot off the gas and were able to pull away as they put the second set to bed 25-11.
The Third set had a much more even start with the teams trading side-outs and finding themselves knotted at 4. The Lions from here took control, scoring 5 straight and going up 9-4 forcing the Rustlers to take a timeout. Ambrose extended their lead which saw the Rustlers make a substitution. This didn't make much of a difference as the Lions held a 7 point lead up 14-7. If the Rustlers wanted to finish in 3, they needed to make something happen quick. After a run of 3 from Lakeland, the momentum looked to be turning, but the Lions took the next 4 to extend their lead further. The Rustlers took a timeout but the Lions took the advantage from the break scoring quickly out of the break. The Rustlers scored on the next point a rally where the ball crossed the net 7 times, but it did not gain any momentum as the Lions continued to put together 3 hit side-outs. Strong Net play from the Lions was key in extending their lead to double digits, 21-11. The Lions cruised and easily won the 3rd 25-12 forcing a 4th set.
The 4th started with the teams trading side-outs with no clear advantage early. As the set started to move out of the early stages the Lions were once again able to jump out to a lead going up 14-8 as the set passed the halfway point. The Rustlers scored the next 2 and looked to cut into the Lion lead. Holding serve and hitting an ace, the Rustlers got within 2, 12-14 and forced the lions to take a timeout. Coming out of the break, the Lions re-established their 5 point lead. going up 18-13. Ambrose further extended their lead pulling away 22-15 and making the result all but final. The Lions tied it up at 2 sets each forcing a 5th winning the set 25- 15
The 5th set opened with the teams trading points to start, but the Lions took over once again. They scored 6 straight to open up a 7-1 lead forcing the Rustlers to call a timeout. The Rustlers scored coming out of the break but the Lions answered going up 8-2 at the court switch. The Lions continued their strong play going up 10-2 and forcing Lakeland to take their second timeout. Again Lakeland scored out of the break but again the Lions quickly responded again scoring 2 in a row and taking a 12-3 lead. the Rustlers scored a few in a row but a Lions Ace set up match point for them. Only needing one serve the Lions won 15-5 taking the consolation final 3-2.
