Evan Van Amsterdam Honoured as 2016-17 ACAC Men’s Curler of the Year

Edmonton, March 3, 2017 – The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference is pleased to announce that Evan Van Amsterdam of the Concordia Thunder has been selected as the 2016-17 ACAC Men's Curler of the Year.

At the 2017 ACAC Curling Championships, Evan proved his mettle as the freshman Skip of the Thunder Mixed Curling team, taking his four all the way through to a Gold Medal victory.  A Bachelor of Management student, Evan is well educated in the sport of Curling and is a great strategic leader with an uncanny ability to hit the critical shots when they are needed most. The ACAC All-Conference selectee led his team to a 12-2 record through the two regional play downs, including a perfect 7-0 run at the Winter event in January. With a straight 5-victory run to Championship Gold in Vermilion, Evan finishes the season with an impressive 17-2 record overall, with a 15 game winning streak dating from the middle of the Fall regional right to the Gold Medal Game.

Head Coach, Dylan Theroux is justifiably proud of his first year Skip.  "I am so proud of what Evan and his team achieved. They all worked so hard to get here and compete for a Gold Medal. Right from the beginning of the year, Evan set the bar high and wanted that Gold Medal Championship."

Evan's past achievements include a 5th place finish in the 2010 Winter Games as well as a 2nd place finish at the Canada Games trials.  In more recent times, Evan won the Alberta High School Provincial Championship last year and finally, achieved a 2nd place finish at the Alberta Junior Provincials in December.

Congratulations Evan on being named as the 2016-17 ACAC Men's Curler of the Year!
