2023 ACAC Women's Volleyball Coaches of the Year

Edmonton, AB (February 22, 2023) -

North Coach of the Year: Austin Dyer

The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is proud to announce Austin Dyer of the Lakeland Rustlers has been named the ACAC Women’s Volleyball North Coach of the Year.

Dyer is a fully certified Level 3 coach with a Master of Education in Coaching Studies. During his 14 years as Head Coach of the Lakeland Women’s Volleyball program he has guided his team to a playoff appearance each year and medaled 4 out of the last five seasons. This current season, the Rustlers Women’s team finished the regular season with a 17 – 1 record and recorded 56 set wins and only three losses.

“Coach Dyer has not only built a strong team but a strong women’s volleyball program at Lakeland”, commented Athletic Director Alan Rogan.”  More importantly he has created a culture of success not only on the court but in the classroom and community.”

Dyers focus on the complete student athlete showed in the first semester, with the teams average GPA being 3.37. Dyer also works with student athletes on the coaching aspect, engaging many of the student athletes as coaches with the Rustlers club volleyball program and youth camps. Dyer also leads several volleyball camps in Alberta and Saskatchewan over the summer. This past year Dyer is also mentoring his 3rd CCAA Female Apprentice coach helping to develop future volleyball coaches.  

This prestigious award will be recognized at the 2023 ACAC Women’s Volleyball Championship hosted by Red Deer Polytechnic in Red Deer, AB.

 

South Coach of the Year: Barry Heidebrecht

The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is proud to announce Barry Heidebrecht of the Ambrose University Lions has been named the ACAC Women’s Volleyball South Coach of the Year.

Barry is in his fourth year working with the Ambrose Lions and in his second full year as Head Coach. Since taking over the squad, the Ambrose Lions have risen from third in the South division to first place after the regular season this year, a very notable achievement. 

Barry has coached for about 30 years, with stints at Trinity Western University, Columbia Bible College, Prairie College, and numerous club teams. He has an eye for excellence, knows what he wants after years in the coaching trenches, and keeps calling his players to higher levels. Some season highlights this year have been finishing first in the ACAC South, enjoying top 10 CCAA National Rankings for much of the season, and seeing the depth and competitiveness continue to grow amongst his group.

Athletic Director Colin Kubinec writes, “Barry has done a tremendous job with the Lions Women’s Volleyball Team. He is a seasoned coach, keeps making wise decisions that help his team grow bit by bit, and he knows how to take his program to the next level. We are really grateful to have him and his strong leadership at the helm of this program.” 

This prestigious award will be recognized at the 2023 ACAC Women’s Volleyball Championship hosted by Red Deer Polytechnic in Red Deer, AB.
