Rustlers roll over Broncos

The Lakeland College Rustlers kept the train running, as the CCAA's #2-ranked side defeated the Olds College Broncos in straight sets at the Ralph Klein Centre on Saturday.

Jenay Varga was a force for Lakeland (8-0) with 10 kills and two aces in just two sets of play, while Avery Bates posted eight kills and two aces of her own. Defensively, Paige Dziadyk posted 10 digs, with libero Seanna Trumier adding seven of her own; meanwhile, Emma Jeffs was the Rustlers' Player of the Game.

For the Broncos (0-6), it was Tabitha Martin leading the attack with six kills and five aces, while Milan Schapowal added four kills, two aces and a stuff block. On the other side of the ball, libero Kendyl Lengyel was Olds College's Player of the Game after posting seven digs.

Lakeland got off to a hot start with a 7-1 lead in the opening set, and the momentum didn't stop en route to a 25-13 win to go up a set. The Broncos showed more fight in the second set as they tried to stay with the Rustlers, only for Lakeland to pull away once again to take a 25-17 win to go up two sets to none. The third set followed a similar path, with Lakeland wrapping up the match after a 25-15 win.

The Rustlers' win sets up a showdown at home with the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens on Nov. 19, while the Broncos are also off next week before travelling to Camrose to face the University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings on Nov. 18.
