Clippers Advance After Four Set Win Versus Lions

The Briercrest Clippers women's volleyball team hosted the Ambrose Lions in a quarter-final playoff matchup.

In the first set, the teams got out to a 4-4 tie early, there was lots of energy from the home crowd in the hanger this afternoon as the fans cheered loud and hard to show their support. The Clippers pulled ahead 8-4, feeding off the energy, resulting in a Lions timeout. Out of the break, Ambrose powered back into the game though, tying the score up at 9 apiece. After some entertaining back and forth play, the Clippers maintained a slight 15-12 lead. After extending their lead to 5, ahead  17-12 now, Ambrose called their second timeout of the set to halt Briercrest's momentum.  Briercrest kept their foot on the gas however and took the first set by a score of 25-14.

The second set painted much of the same picture, to begin with, although seeing a reversal in the result. The game was tied at 4 early, with neither team having an edge and lots of exciting rallies. Ambrose pulled ahead 9-6, and eventually 12-8, the Clippers then called a timeout to regroup.  Out of the break, Briercrest cut the lead to one, now trailing 12-11. Ambrose went on a 5-0 run after that, now ahead 17-11. This saw Briercrest call another timeout to slow their momentum.  Ambrose kept rolling out of the break, however, extending their margin and winning the second set by a score of 25-18.

Yet again, the game was tied 4-4 early on with the play favoring neither one team nor the other.  Briercrest managed to gain a narrow lead, keeping Ambrose at bay by one or two points into the middle of the set. After extending their lead to 15-8, the Lions called a timeout. Briercrest kept ahead, going up 19-11, with strong serving and blocking contributing to their margin. After another Ambrose timeout late in the set, Briercrest held firm to their lead and took the third set  25-17.

The fourth set saw more back and forth early on, with Briercrest looking determined to put the game away, but Ambrose not going down without a fight. With the score now 10-5 for the Clippers, the Lions called timeout. Briercrest pushed on and got up 18-9 with momentum looking on their side. After an Ambrose timeout, they narrowed the gap to 20-14, which in turn saw a Briercrest timeout. Briercrest held off Ambrose and won the fourth set 25-20, taking the match three sets to one.

Briercrest Women's volleyball alumni Mia Heppel presented the ACAC player of the game awards. For Ambrose, the award went to #4 Christina Banks, who recorded 11 digs and 1 assist in the match. For Briercrest, the award went to #11 Julia Beer, who had 12 kills, 4 aces, 3 digs, and 2 blocks in the game.
