Vikings top Huskies in five-set battle
The Augustana Vikings needed five sets (25-17, 21-25, 20-25, 25-23, 15-11) to do it, but claimed a critical win over the Keyano Huskies in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) action Friday in Fort McMurray, Alta.
Making their first and only trip to the Syncrude Sport and Wellness Centre this season, the Vikings burst out of the gate to win the opening set. However, the Huskies rallied to win the next two. Facing defeat in a razor-thin fourth set, the Vikings edged the Huskies before claiming the win in the fifth set.
Shae Boyes led the Vikings with 13 kills while Emily Peterson had 10 to reach double digits. Three other Vikings each sported six kills in the match. Four Vikings each recorded multiple service aces in the contest, led by a trio each from DJ Molle and Addison Wolosuk.
Peterson had a team-high fie blocks on the VIkings' side.
Tyneille Neufeld led the Huskies with 18 kills while Karlene Kaminski and Jamie Ferns each had 12 kills. Lainey Granley had nine kills in the match. Amber Francis collected half of the Huskies' six aces in the match.
Erika Box tied a season-high with 39 assists in the match.
Before Friday's game, the Huskies paid tribute to graduating middle Kayla Wandowich, a three-time National Scholar Award recipient.
Francis and Hannah Kuhn each earned Player of the Game honours for their respective sides.
