Lions Sweep the Trojans
Coming off a close win yesterday against the SAIT Trojans, Lions fans were eager to see what tonight's game would hold. The first few points of the game were indicative of what was to come as the Lions got to a quick 6-1 lead, thanks to effective terminations and seamless defense. The turnaround from yesterday's game was significant and there was a night and day difference in the way the Lions played. What started slow and felt disjointed yesterday was replaced with precision and confidence as they won in a handily 3 sets to 0.
Strong passing allowed setter Sarah Janz to spread the ball with ease, keeping the Trojan blockers off balance and opening up court for the hitters to find. Player of the game Maddi Williscroft was on fire offensively with an impressive 12 kills and 2 aces. Post-game, Lion's coach Colin Kubinec said he was thrilled with the engagement of Williscroft in the right side and her combination of C-balls, D-balls, and right side attacks and varying the speed of her shots made her highly effective. Middle hitter Willow Lewington also continues to be an offensive and defensive threat to any team they face with a number of big hits and huge blocks.
Their efforts were magnified alongside a decrease in unforced errors, which allowed the Lions to continually build momentum. Player of the game for the Trojans was Libero Kristen Leippi.
