Lions Narrowly Defeated by Queens
After starting the season 3-0, the Lions faced arguably their toughest opponent of the season so far, the Red Deer Queens. While the Lions were up 2 sets to 1 and were looking good in the fourth set, strong play from the Queens resulted in a 5th set loss. The Queens had a strong start in the first set against the Ambrose Lions and brought a battle to the Lions throughout the rest of the game.
The second set began with a lot of miscommunication on Ambrose's side as well as an increase in unforced errors. They were able to rally together, gaining momentum from some huge blocks with little challenge in the way of blocks, tying the game at 20. Red deer regained momentum with a huge block on a pipe ball followed shortly after by two kills from Red Deer #18, Emma Letkeman, and won the set 27-25. The Lions had a slow start to the set but by 10-10 both teams were hitting hard and challenging the defense. Red Deer put up a solid block, forcing the Lions to vary their shots and play with tighter coverage.
The fourth set saw the Lion's come out strong with a huge kill from Lion's captain Ali Leskow. Although they were down 11-17, a key timeout by head coach Colin Kubinec refocused the Lions and they managed to tie the game 20-20, narrowly losing the set 25-23. The Lion's were able to get lots of touches in the 5th set but struggled to finish plays, losing the game in the 5th set 15-12. Player of the game for the Queens was #11 Emma Holmes, and for the Lions, # 7 Vanessa Boone.
