WVB | Kodiaks fall to Trojans in home opener

Oct. 19, 2018 – Consider it a case of home opening jitters for the Lethbridge College Kodiaks women's volleyball team.

Playing in front of a sizable Val Matteotti Gymnasium crowd, the Kodiaks seemed out of sync and couldn't get things back on the rails during a 3-0 loss to the SAIT Trojans.

Lethbridge (1-2) came out swinging out of the gate, matching the Trojans (1-2) point for point, until a four-point SAIT run forced the Kodiaks into a timeout. The home side then proceeded to make multiple mental errors, with a medley of missed serves and illegal rotations, helping SAIT jump out to an early 25-16 set one win.

Feeding off the energy in the building, the Trojans jumped out to a huge lead in set two and never looked back. SAIT scored 12 of the first 13 points, coasting their way to a 25-20 victory for a 2-0 advantage. The Kodiaks used a run of five great serves from Grace Kazanowski to make things interesting late, but the Trojans lead proved too big to overcome.

Looking to avoid a sweep, the Kodiaks were unable to gain any momentum in the third and final set. SAIT jumped out to a 12-6 lead, and while a series of blocks from Jamie Brown helped the Kodiaks close the gap to 20-17, a late Kodiaks missed serve and smooth offensive plays from SAIT helped them close out the match 25-21.

Sianna Cherweniuk was named player of the game for Lethbridge, while Jadyn Leong took the honours for SAIT.

The Kodiaks and Trojans will clash again tomorrow night, with first serve set from Calgary at 6 p.m.
