WVB | Kodiaks Down Broncos
Feb. 16, 2018 – Fighting to improve their playoff positioning, the Lethbridge College Kodiaks took care of business in straight sets (25-14, 25-15, 27-25) against the Olds Broncos on Friday night.
The Kodiaks currently sit in fourth place in the ACAC south division but have a fighting chance to move into third place with one game remaining.
A win tomorrow in their regular season finale against Olds, paired with an Ambrose Lions loss to Briercrest, will help the Kodiaks avoid a first-round matchup with the north division's top seed at next weekend's conference championship tournament.
Lethbridge had to be careful against a Broncos team that remains without a victory on the season. The Kodiaks cruised to a 2-0 set advantage early but had to bear down and fight hard to come back and win the third set after being down 24-23.
The first set saw Broncos Vic Ringuette with an impressive four kills and three digs, but the Kodiaks were ready for her. Kodiaks setter Ashleigh Noel had two digs, three kills and six huge assists, which set up Laura Serafini for four big kills and a block to take the set 25-14.
Sianna Cherweniuk and Shelby Rinehart kicked off the second set for the Kodiaks with two kills each, while Rinehart also earned a key service ace. Broncos Jordyn Shewchuk wasn't ready to give up without a fight, scoring on two kills and an ace of her own. In the end the Kodiaks offense was too much, as they took the set 25-15.
Seeking redemption, the Broncos came out hot in the third set and overtaking the Kodiaks for the first time in the game. Megan Gleddie led Olds with five digs and three kills, but ultimately the Broncos were no match for Corissa Mildenberger with five kills and two aces, and Laura Serafini with five kills, one dig, and one block to regain control and take the final set 27-25.
After the game the Kodiaks honoured Mildenberger, their fifth-year senior who will graduate from the program after this season.
Serafini led the Kodiaks with 14 kills overall, while Harper Elwood was named player of the game while striking for five kills and six digs.
With this win the Kodiaks advance to 13-10 in the season, while the Broncos fall to 0-23.
The two teams will now play their regular season finale tomorrow afternoon at the Val Matteotti Gym, with first-serve set for 1 p.m.
Players of the Game:
Broncos - #14 Jennifer Saj (7 digs, 1 kill, 16 assists, 1 block)
Kodiaks - #14 Harper Elwood (6 digs, 5 kills, 3 assists)
