Lions Complete the Sweep, Go Undefeated Against Trojans

On November 17th last year, the Ambrose Women's Volleyball team made history by defeating the SAIT Trojans for the first time ever. Last night, the Lions broke down another barrier by beating their crosstown rivals for the fourth time in as many games season, going undefeated against the Trojans in convincing fashion.

After winning against the Trojans in SAIT's gym on Friday night, the Lions looked very comfortable for the first two sets of Saturday's match. Making prodigious use of their middles right out of the gate, Ambrose's offense looked to be too much for the visiting Trojans to handle and went up 15-8. Relentless attacking and serving stretched the lead out even farther, and the Lions cruised to a 25-13 first set victory.

The second set was an even more dominant showing for the home team; the attacking of Jeena Johner, Maddy Williscroft and Ali Leskow provided all the spark the Lions would need to take another substantial lead. Mady Kerr (10 digs), the home team's Player of the Game, played her part in anchoring the defense that proved so frustrating for the Trojans, while Willow Lewington was putting balls back and picking up blocks wherever SAIT would try to score.

In a surprising turnaround, the Trojans found their groove in the third set. Up 9-8 against the Lions, SAIT would only allow the home team 4 more points in the entirety of the set. SAIT POG, rookie setter Tessa Geier (25 assists, 6 digs), changed up her team's offense and gave middle Simran Dhami more opportunities to kill the ball, and the Lions defense was caught off guard. The third set ended in a very quick 25-13 finish, mirroring the results of the first set.

Both teams having tightened up their play, the fourth set proved a much closer contest than the first three. Ambrose found themselves up a few points early on and did well to hold on to that lead, keeping the Trojans 3-4 points down for the majority of the set. Down 19-24, the Trojans made a desperate late push and scored four straight points to make the score 23-24, but the scare would end there after a Trojans missed serve.

The Lions remain solidly in third place in the ACAC South, now having won 11 of their last 12 games and sitting at 13-7. Their last two weekends of the year pit them against the top two teams in their division: the RDC Queens and the Briercrest Clippers. The home game against Red Deer will take place next Thursday night at 6:00 pm, and the teams will travel to RDC the following Saturday.
