Last November, the Women's Volleyball team needed four sets to dispatch the visiting Medicine Hat Rattlers. Last Friday, they improved on that venture by defeating the 6th place Rattlers in three sets. Just as she did in her last home game against Medicine Hat, rookie outside Maddy Williscroft was the Ambrose Player of the Game, leading the Lions in both kills (14) and digs (11).
Ambrose started the match with a flurry of tough serves, their first two points both coming from aces by Jess Zacharias. Their blocking and side-out offense built on the lead from there, and the home team remained fully in control throughout the first set. Up 24-21, a setter dump from Zacharias completed the first of what would be three set victories on the night.
The Rattlers' play picked up in the second, as 1st year leftside Grace Porter picked up most of the offensive slack for her team. She had 10 kills and 6 digs in the match and was named her team's POG. Rattler middles Paige Burton and Laura Velcoff had big nights defensively, coming up with three stuff blocks each to slow down the Ambrose front row in the 2nd set. The teams remained close the whole way, and went back and forth late in the set to bring it to extra points. Ambrose was down 26-27, but scored three quick points in a row to come back and take a 2-0 lead.
From then on it was all Ambrose, who took an early 2-1 lead and never lost it. In addition to 5 kills, Lions leftside Jeena Johner had 3 massive stuff blocks that quieted any Rattler attempts at a late comeback, and before long it was Lions game point: 24-16. The home team POG swung one last time and picked up her 14th kill of the night to win it for the Lions and increase their win streak to four games.
Next weekend the Lions play their crosstown rivals, the SAIT Trojans, who they swept last semester in two close five-set games. Tune in at 6:00 pm next Saturday to see this rivalry rekindled, as the Lions push ever higher on the ACAC South rankings
