WVB | Kodiaks take down Medicine Hat

WVB | Kodiaks take down Medicine Hat

Jan. 20, 2018 – Looking for revenge after a tough five set loss last evening, the Lethbridge College Kodiaks came out with a vengeance on Saturday night.

Dominating the game from start to finish, the Kodiaks dismantled the Medicine Hat Rattlers in straight sets (25-23, 25-17, 25-15) to split the weekend home-and-home rivalry series.

The Kodiaks once again turned to veteran Kristine Ward to pace their offensive attack. Ward tallied 11 kills and eight digs on her way to being named the Kodiaks player of the game

The Kodiaks won the first set powered by four kills each from Ward, Jamie Brown and Laura Serafini. Medicine Hat's Amber Stigter countered with four of her own.

The Kodiaks paced themselves to a 17-11 lead to open the match but let Medicine Hat slip back into the set. With the score 17-14, the set turned on a miraculous running save from Ashleigh Noel, which was finished off by a Jamie Brown denial at the net to stop a Rattlers rally. The Kodiaks went on to finish the set 25-23, although Medicine Hat tried to make things interesting with three late points.

With the first set behind them, Lethbridge seemed to calm their nerves and play more focused the rest of the way.

They jumped out to a 5-0 lead in set two and cruised to a 25-17 win, aided by a six-serve streak from Corissa Mildenberger and three more kills from Ward.

While the Kodiaks have experienced trouble putting teams away so far this season, they had no such trouble against the Rattlers in set three.

Lethbridge came back from an early 3-0 hole in the third set with a six-point rally, then calmly took control on their way to a 25-17 win.

Kodiaks libero Reina Hirata had 10 digs, while Noel and Mildenberger each had strong service games while notching two service aces each.

Stigter led the Rattlers attack with 12 total kills, while Janessa Oelke had 20 assists for MHC.

The Kodiaks will now hit the road for an important road series against the Red Deer College Queens next weekend. Meanwhile, Medicine Hat will engage in a home-and-home with the upstart Ambrose Lions in their next matchup.
