Lady Lions Defeat Kodiaks In Five Sets

Capping off a competitive weekend between two evenly-matched teams, the Ambrose Lions beat the visiting Lethbridge Kodiaks in five sets on Saturday night. Whereas Friday night's game, also a five-setter, ended in a 15-12 Kodiaks victory, the Lions took control of the final set and left no doubt for the home crowd; the final score was 15-6.

The first set was all Ambrose. The Kodiaks struggled to find their offense, and the Lions were piling on the pressure from behind the end line. Willow Lewington (8 kills, 3 blocks, 2 aces) began serving when the score was 15-15, and did not stop serving until the Lions took the first set 25-15.

Late in the second set, the Lions looked like they were about to take a 2-0 lead. Up 24-22, some incredible defense by the Kodiaks brought the visiting team back from the brink as they stole the set 27-25. 2nd year Kodiaks rightside Taya Mikado became her team's go-to option, scoring from almost every position on the court with ease. Mikado was her team's Player of the Game, with 12 kills, 1 ace, 1 block, and 20 digs.

The Lions struck back in the third set, winning 25-21 and taking a 2-1 lead. Ambrose's leftsides carried the offense, but middles Willow Lewington and Kelsey Olsen (6 kills, 4 blocks, 1 ace) got a few kills in clutch moments that helped close out the 3rd set.

Not to be outdone, Lethbridge took an early 7-2 lead in the fourth and maintained it for the rest of the set. Mikado and Kristine Ward continued to power the Kodiaks offense, despite the impressive defense of Lions POG Mady Kerr (17 digs). The Kodiaks dominated the set, winning 25-16 and sending the match to a fifth set for the third time this season against the Lions.

This time, however, it was the Lions' turn to strike first and take the early lead. Already up 8-3 when the teams switched sides, the Lions kept their foot on the gas and went on a 6-1 run to take themselves to set and match point. The final score, after a kill from Lewington in the middle, was 15-6.

This win takes the Lions to 7-7 overall. Next weekend they'll face the Olds Broncos, in Calgary on Friday night and in Olds on Saturday. The women play at 6:00 pm, and the men's game will follow.
