Visiting Clippers Sweep the Lions

Facing an team with only one loss this season, the Lady Lions knew that the Briercrest Clippers women's team would be the toughest opponent they've faced so far. Briercrest didn't disappoint, winning both games in straight sets and showing that they're a contender for yet another ACAC title.

Friday night's contest was defined by the Clippers' constant pressure on the Lions from the service line. Despite some great blocking on Samantha Zacharias by Lions POG Ashleigh McKinnon to start the game, Ambrose's passing wasn't good enough to make a dent in the Clippers' armor.

Down 8-17 in the second set, the Lions mounted a furious comeback and even took the lead late in the set, 25-24. From there, the Clippers scored three quick points to steal the victory and go up two sets to none, in a heartbreaking finish for Lions fans.

The third set saw Briercrest shake off the nerves from the last set and get back to  controlling the match. Becky Garner had three service aces on the night, keeping the pressure on Ambrose's serve receive, while libero and Clippers POG Kirsty Kindrachuk was everywhere on defense. The final score of the set was 25-17 and a 3-0 victory for the visitors.

The next afternoon Briercrest secured another victory, this time relying on their blocking to stifle Ambrose's offense. Racking up 10 blocks (5 of which belonged to Clippers middle Karina Peterson) Briercrest didn't let up at any point and won in three convincing sets over the home team. Ambrose POG Jeena Johner, the rookie from Saskatchewan playing at libero for the first time, anchored the Lions defense and did all she could to keep her team alive.

Briercrest's Player of the Game was rookie leftside Justine Collin (8 kills and 2 aces) leading her team to 5-1 and the #2 spot in the ACAC South. Shae Mendes, another standout for the Lions, blocked three Clippers attacks in her first game back from being injured.

Next weekend the Lions will be hosting Red Deer College on Friday night. The women will play at 6:00 pm with the men to follow; tune in on acactv.ca to watch it live.
