Lions Win Home Opener In Five Sets

Team captain Julia Kemper led her team offensively with 13 kills and 2 service aces, while rookies Jess Zacharias, Jeena Johner, and Willow Lewington each had stellar performances. Almost unstoppable from the middle, Lewington was the night's Player of the Game, scoring 9 kills and 2 aces.

The Lions came out swinging in the first set, scoring at will and frustrating the Kodiaks with relentless defense. Cheered on by the crowd, the home team won the first set 25-13. The Kodiaks would bounce back, however, take advantage of mental lapses by the Lions and adapting their play to handle what the home team was throwing at them. 4th year outside Kristine Ward had 17 kills on the night, while fellow 4th year Laura Serafini added 11 kills of her own out of the middle. Lethbridge won the next two sets in convincing fashion (25-22 and 25-19), powered by aggressive serving and attacking. Kodiaks Player of the Game Ashleigh Noel pressured the Lions from the service line, racking up 4 aces.

The fourth set saw the Lions jump out to an early 5-point lead and maintain it throughout most of the set. A late push by the Kodiaks brought the visitors to within 2 points, but a hitting error by Lethbridge 5th year Corissa Mildenberger forced a 5th and final set.

Both teams came alive in the 5th, along with the crowd, as Willow Lewington opened it up with a big kill from the middle. Jeena Johner, with 6 kills, 1 ace, and 12 digs on the night, brought the energy and helped push her team towards their victory. The Lions and Kodiaks battled through the whole set, keeping the score relatively close until the Lions found themselves at set and game point with a two point lead. Lewington's final swing from the middle went off the Kodiaks block and out to hand Ambrose its first victory of the season.

Tonight the teams will rematch in Lethbridge, as Ambrose looks to keep its record perfect. Head to acactv.com to watch the game online, where the women will play at 6:00 PM and the men's game will follow at 8:00 PM.
