Kodiaks earn crucial 3-1 win over Olds
Sept. 29, 2018 – A spirited second half lifted the Kodiaks women's soccer team to a crucial 3-1 win over the Olds Broncos on Saturday afternoon.
Battling for position in the tight ACAC south division standings, the Kodiaks used goals from Bryce Sherring, Christine Moser and Kayla Kehoe to help them collect three important points.
The Kodiaks controlled most of the possession in the first half but were unable to beat Olds keeper Auslin Rae McDaniel-Perrin. Lethbridge's defence kept Olds' dangerous offensive weapons at bay with the help of two key saves from Brittany Klein, including one off a free kick from 40 metres out.
Sherring, who is quickly turning into a rookie sensation for the Kodiaks, broke the deadlock in the 63rd minute by breaking in to the middle and striking the ball into the top left corner.
Olds quickly replied with a marker from Felicia Rodney less than two minutes later, but the Kodiaks remained composed and got back on the offensive attack.
Moser added her third of the season in the 76th minute by grabbing a loose ball and ripping one past McDaniel-Perrin from close range.
The Kodiaks then put the game away by capitalizing on a rare mistake from the Broncos keeper. Kehoe applied great pressure on McDaniel-Perrin, forcing her to fumble the ball. Kehoe pounced on the resulting empty net to salt the game away during extra time.
It was an emotional win for the Kodiaks, who were once again joined by Payden Olsen on the sidelines. It was also Olsen's birthday, so needless to say the win was dedicated to her after the game.
Lethbridge (3-2-1) will now gear up for a tough test against division leading SAIT on Sunday. Kick-off is set for noon from Calgary. Olds (3-3-1) will head to Medicine Hat to take on the Rattlers in a game also set to start at noon.
