Queens win Game 2, goaltender Tanya Disotell-Dunsmore stops 31 in the win
Red Deer, March 18, 2023 – Goaltender Tanya Disotell-Dunsmore (Bachelor of Science in Pre-Opt) continued to shut the door on the NAIT Ooks in Game 2 as the Red Deer Polytechnic Queens will head to Edmonton next week with a chance to win to their second consecutive championship after defeating the Ooks tonight.
7 minutes into the opening period, forward Avery Lajeunnesse (Bachelor of Education) sprinted hard for an open puck in the offensive zone and won the battle with the Ooks defenseman. She would drive to the net with the puck and trickle it past the Ooks goaltender to open up the scoring in Game 2.
At the end of the first, the Queens controlled the game as they outshot the Ooks 14-4.
However, on NAIT's seventh shot of the game, they would finally solve Disotell-Dunsmore for the first time in the series as forward Payton Basterash (Personal Fitness Trainer) scored a powerplay markers. The Queens goaltender was just a bit too late jumping on the rebound and Basterash got to the puck first where she was able to find the back of the net to tie it up at one.
The Queens would answer back with six minutes to go in the second period on a powerplay of their own. On a two-on-one, forward Brenna Reid (Bachelor of Kinesiology) would make the selfish decision to shoot and it paid off as she picked up the teams second goal of the night which regained the Queens one-goal lead.
The Polytechnic just had four shots in the period with the visiting Ooks outshooting the home team in the second with 12 but still trailed the Queens in total shots.
Red Deer would open up the third period and extend their lead with a goal from forward Jailyn Bablitz (Bachelor of Education) who would not even blink as she jumped on the loose puck in the blue paint and one timed it in the back of the net. This was ultimately the game-winner.
Seconds later forward Arilyn Toews (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) picked up her second goal of the series which led to the Ooks calling a timeout.
The short break paid off for NAIT as forward Jessica Engelbrecht (Bachelor of Business Administration) would pick up a rebound off a save from Disotell-Dunsmore and make the Queens pay as she found the back of the net to cut the lead down to two.
But it was not enough as the Queens defeat the Ooks 4-2 and Disotell-Dunsmore stopped 31 shots in her second consecutive playoff win.
At the end of the game, NAIT ended up outshooting the Queens 34-21, so it was quite the incredible performance from the Red Deer goaltender.
Ooks forward Michaela Kibblewhite (Bachelor of Business Administration) and Queens Avery Lajeunnesse took home the player of the game honours.
Game 3 will happen next week Friday, March 24 in Edmonton at 7 pm.
