The Queens score three unanswered to defeat the Trojans
Red Deer, February 17, 2023 – The Red Deer Polytechnic Queens scored three unanswered goals to come away with a 3-1 victory against the SAIT Trojans.
It would be the SAIT Trojans who would open the scoring 10 minutes into the first period on their fourth shot of the game on the powerplay. Forward Tamryn Ward (Radio Television and Broadcast News) picked up a rebound in the blue paint and fired it past Queens goaltender Tanya Disotell-Dunsmore (Bachelor of Science). RDP outshot the Trojans 10-8 at the end of the first.
The Queens started their second period with a goal on the powerplay less than two minutes into the frame. Forward Jailyn Bablitz released a shot from the top of the faceoff circle and over the glove of the Trojans goaltender to tie the game up.
At the end of the second period, the Queens continued to outshoot the Trojans 25-15.
The Queens would gain the lead for the first time in the game as forward Madison Sansom (Social Work) would extend her points streak to eight games and her goal streak to five games. Sansom picked up the puck off the boards and drove hard to the net where she shot it into the top corner above the glove of the Trojans goaltender.
Minutes later, Sansom would score her sixth on the year to extend the Queens lead to two. The Social Work student beat one Trojans defender where she moved into the slot and fired a wrist shot for the Queens third goal of the game.
With under three minutes left to play, the Trojans called a timeout to go over their game plan as they look for two goals to tie it up at three.
The Queens would walk away with a 3-1 victory.
Trojans goaltender Rebecca Boswell was named her team's player of the game with a 34-save performance. The Queens player of the game went to forward Madison Sansom with two goals on the night.
These two teams will face off in a rematch tomorrow afternoon in Calgary at 2:45 pm.
