Queens defeat Rustlers in Lakeland ACAC Debut

The Lakeland College King's Energy Group Rustlers opened up play in their inaugural ACAC season on Friday October 14th. The visiting team was the defending ACAC champions from Red Deer Polytechnic. A pre-game tailgate party, DJ and BBQ accompanied the home opener for the Rustlers and Queens.

Red Deer opened the scoring with a power play goal from Avery Lajeunesse as she scored with 12:39 left in period one. McKayla Pylypow was sent off for hooking and the Queens would capitalize with the man advantage. That would be the lone goal of the period. The Rustlers had a number of great scoring chances, outshooting the Queens 10-7, but goaltender Tanya Disotell-Dunsmore stopped all ten shots from the Rustlers.

The second period brought two more goals by the Queens with Haley Kicia and Alli Soyko scoring three minutes apart late in period two to lead Red Deer to a 3-0 lead heading into the third period. The Queens would outshoot Lakeland 10-8 in the period.

The final period started off with a bang for the Rustlers as Kylie Perry scored 0:18 into the period. Assists came from Kennedy Taylor and Olivia Mann. The Rustlers would push for a second goal to try and cut the lead to one, but were unable to cut into the deficit. Shots on goal were 8-8 with Lakeland holding a narrow 26-25 advantage overall. Disotell-Dunsmore would take the win in the pipes for Red Deer while Chantel Weller took the loss in the net for Lakeland.

The Rustlers will host the Olds College Broncos on Saturday October 22nd. Puck drop is at 7:00pm at the Russ Robertson Arena.
