2023 ACAC Women's Basketball Rookies of the Year

North Rookie of the Year presented by Alberta Basketball: Kourtney Oss
The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is pleased to announce that Kourtney Oss of the Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE) Thunder has been selected as the 2022-23 ACAC Women’s Basketball North Division Rookie of the Year.
Playing in 15 games in her rookie season, Oss averaged a double-double of 13.2 ppg and 12.2 rbg. Her 12.2 rebounds per game was also good enough to lead the ACAC, and she led the conference in blocks per game at 2.3. She also finished second in the ACAC averaging 4.5 offensive rebounds per game and 7.7 defensive rebounds per game. Oss proved to be an integral part of the Thunder defence as they lead the ACAC in points against per game, finished in first place in the ACAC North Division and clinched a bye directly to the ACAC Championship Tournament.
“Since stepping onto the court for the first time last fall, Kourtney has been an important part of our Thunder basketball team” commented Nate MacLellan, Concordia’s Director of Athletics & Recreation. “Coach Valpreda had high expectations for her coming in, and she has been able to exceed those. She has worked hard on improving and developing herself as a student-athlete, and has become a leader on and off the court. Kourtney has put her skill and passion on display this past seasib. This is a significant accomplishment for her in her first year, and I’m excited to see her continued development in the future. Congratulations on this award, Kourtney!”
A native of Sherwood Park, Alberta, Oss is in her first year of a Bachelor of Science degree.
This prestigious award will be recognized at the 2023 ACAC Women’s Basketball Championship hosted by Lethbridge College in Lethbridge, AB.
South Rookie of the Year presented by Alberta Basketball: Kitawna Sparks
The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is pleased to announce that Kitawna Sparks of the Lethbridge College Kodiaks has been selected as the 2022-23 ACAC Women’s Basketball South Rookie of the Year.
Sparks is a 3X Kodiaks Athlete of the Week selection and one time Athlete of the Month. She finished second in the league in points per game with 17.3 and first in the league with a 61.5% field goal percentage. She also finished her rookie campaign averaging 9.3 rebounds per game to finish in seventh.
“Kitawna has been a force all year and her ability to run and post up early has been a key to our offensive success” says Kodiaks Head Coach Ken McMurray. “Toughness, rebounding and her genuine pleasure in seeing her teammates succeed has made a her a pleasure to coach.”
“Kit has stepped into a leader role and results speak for themselves,” says Todd Caughlin, Athletics Manager of the Kodiaks. “What an incredible recognition for Kitawna to earn, we are proud of her!”
Sparks is a first year Open Studies student athlete and is from Taber, AB.
