Vikings advance to play another day, Kodiaks headed home

The First Consolation game of day two took place between the Augustana Vikings and the Lethbridge College Kodiaks. The Game started with The Vikings missing on their first chance as well as their chance at second chance points. Lethbridge followed suit turning the ball over on their first possession. The Kodiaks were first to score on a fast break with Millay Johnson making an open layup. The Kodiaks scored again off a stop and took a 4-0 lead. the score stayed here as more time tivcked off the clock, with the Vikings finally getting on the board 3:30 into the game. With the low scoring affair, Augustana was not out of the game by any stretch despite only scoring once in 4 minutes as the Kodiaks had only scored twice. The Kodiaks added a 3 and opened up a 7-2 lead forcing the Vikings to call a timeout, the Kodaks were the ones to use the timeout effectively getting to the line to hit one and open a 8-2 lead. The Vikings scored a quick bucket to cut the Kodiak lead to 4, but a very low scoring quarter saw neither team in double digits entering the last minute of the quarter. A last second 3 from the Vikings saw them take the lead as the quarter ended 9-8.

The second quarter got off to a hot start with Viking Sheridan Popenia hitting a deep 3 on their first trip down the floor. The Vikings hit another 3, going up 15-8 before you could blink. The Kodiaks committed 2 turnovers on their first 2 possessions. Augustana took advantage scoring another basket and forcing Lethbridge to take a timeout. The Vikings continued to pull away, going up 20-9 as the 3 minute mark in the quarter passed. The Kodiaks remained cold in the second quarter with only one point through 4 minutes in the quarter. They finally broke the drought with a deep 3 with 5:54 on the clock bringing the score to 20-12. Again the offence on the floor went cold with no points for almost 3 minutes and the Viking remaining up by 8. The Vikings finally hit a 3 with 3 minutes on the clock extending their lead to 11 once again. Another 3 from the Vikings and a quick inside basket saw them again open up the lead, 28-12. A late basket from the Vikings further extended their lead, holding the Kodiaks to only 4 points in the quarter. Augustana was up on Lethbridge 30-12 at the half.

The Third quarter started off with the first 2 minutes going by with no change in score. While close, neither team could find the basket early. The First points of the half came for the Kodiaks off a layup, followed quickly with a 3 from Natalie Hoyt. Another quick inside basket from Kristen Barwegen saw the Kodiaks at 19 with the Vikings stalled at 30. Another Lethbridge 3 saw them reduce the Augustana lead to 8 with the Vikings still held off the board. They Finally scored with Sheridan Popenia making a circus layup inside to get things started. The Vikings used this energy to come up with a quick steal, but a poor pass saw the Kodiaks jump on a fast break to again make the lead 8. This forced the Vikings to take a timeout after scoring only once in the opening 6 minutes. The Vikings finally got rolling on offence scoring a quick few baskets and going up 37-24. The Kodiaks hit a single Free throw only to be answered by a Viking 3. And the Vikings had re-established a large lead 40-25. Now in Bonus, the Kodiaks earned a trip to the line, again going one for two. The Vikings hit a shot at the buzzer and went up 42-26 at the end of the third.

The Fourth quarter started with the Kodiaks scoring early on a quick fast break. The Vikings were able to answer right back with a quick inside basket. Tobore Okome quickly put another in for Augustana to hit 10 points on the game. Lethbridge was able to answer right away but could not make up any ground early in the quarter. With 6:50 on the clock, the Vikings took a timeout up 46-30. The Vikings hit quickly out of the break but were quickly answered by the Kodiaks scoring in the paint twice in a row. Viking, Hannah Mitchell fouled out with 5 minutes left in the fourth but with Augustana up 50-35 there seemed to be less consequence at this point in the game. The Kodiaks added a single to make it 36-50 and took a timeout with 3:20 on the clock. The teams defense again tightened up as the teams went cold for over a minute again. The Vikings broke it with 5 quick points to the Kodiaks one and with one minute on the clock the Vikings remained in the lead 55-37. With the contest out of reach the Kodaks hit a deep 2 answered by the Vikings as time ticked off the clock. The Vikings won 57-42 and lived to fight another day.
