Keyano Huskies come in to tonight's home stand with an impressive record of 17 wins and 3 defeats in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference women's basketball.

Their opponent tonight the Concordia University of Edmonton Thunder with a record of 7 wins and 13 losses.

Now ...one might think on paper that this game would be a blow out?

Erase that thought. 

When the two teams met last time, back in November 2019 in Edmonton, the visiting Huskies edged the Thunder 65-64 and 68-51.

 

1st Period

Huskies 15 Thunder 14

Huskies score off the opening tip with Casey Gorieu going straight to the hoop.

Both teams struggling against the defensive systems set up by the respective coaches.

Huskies' Kaitlyn de Sousa Martins hurts her leg in the dying seconds following a rebound in which she collided with one of her teammates.

 

2nd Period

Huskies 27 Thunder 25

Highlight of period was Huskies' Tyshaine Page hitting the three off of a broken play to beat the shot clock buzzer making it 24-23 Huskies.

Moiyan Toure solid game for Huskies with 6 points 7 boards.

Thunder's Jasmine Jones, from Macon, Georgia, controlling the point and showcasing her ball handling skills has 8 points and 6 rebounds.

 

 

3rd Period

Keyano 40 Thunder 45

Thunder using the baseball pass to beat the Huskies  down the hardwood and to the hoop, resulting in two points or a foul or a combination of both.

Thunder up 42-37 with 1:46 to go.

Two rookies – Brooke Froment and Leah Piekema – playing well for the visitors.

Third year guard Kaelyn Bryks has a quiet 11 points for the Thunder and Piekema 10.

 

4th Period

Keyano  53 Thunder 51

Exciting final minutes as teams trade baskets with HORSE like trick shots.

Big time three by Huskies' Gorieu.

Tied at 51-51 with 38.3 seconds to go.

With 3.1 seconds remaining Paige draws the foul on the drive to the hoop.

She makes both free throws 53-51 Huskies.

Thunder head coach Robbie Valpreda calls timeout.

Thunder take out ball at half court but come up short at the buzzer.

Huskies player of the game Toure with 17 points 11 rebounds.

Thunder player of the game Ann Ulmer 10 rebounds 7 points.
