Slow start costs Clippers
Caronport, SK. January 25th saw the Briercrest Clippers Women's basketball team hosting the St.Mary's Lightning.
Coming off a loss last night, Briercrest was looking to bounce back in this Saturday afternoon game. St.Mary's jumped out to an early 14-2 lead and the clippers called a timeout down 12. The momentum didn't swing their way though as the lightning pushed their lead to 24 and were up 29-5 entering the second.
In the second, St.Mary's was up by 32 halfway through the quarter. Excellent rebounding and defence from the lightning saw them entering halftime up 43-10.
Starting the third quarter, Briercrest opened on a 9-3 run. However, St.Mary's remained strong and good three point shooting saw them up 60-26 with three minutes left in the quarter. It was a much better quarter for the clippers, who had 25 points in the third. But still trailed 70-35 heading into the fourth quarter.
In the final quarter, The clippers came out strong going on a 17-6 run and with the score now at 76-52 halfway through the fourth, St.Mary's called a timeout. In the final 5 minutes, Briercrest outscored St.Mary's 11-6 closing strong. But St.Mary's took home a 82-63 win.
Presenting the player of the game awards was Psychology Professor T.C Chang, for St.Mary's the award went to #14 Emily Wagner, who recorded 18 Points, 8 Rebounds, 4 Assists and 2 steals. The award for Briercrest went to #23 Angenay Williams who put up 29 Points, 11 Rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists.
After the game, Angenay had this to say: "We had a couple of banged up bodies and the transition of adjusting to new coaching and a new system, we'll be alright. Going to prepare for playoffs, we were playing a good team, with lots of experienced girls over there and we're just gonna try and bounce back and get back on our feet".
The Clippers are back in action next weekend as they travel to Old's Alberta to take on the Broncos.
