Lightning strike hard and fast

Caronport, SK. January 24th saw the Briercrest Clippers women's basketball team hosting the St.Mary's lightning. 

 

St.Mary's came out strong, taking an early 5-0 Lead. The clippers then went on a 8-0 run, and for the remainder of the quarter the teams went back and forth, but strong 3-point shooting from St.Marys would give them a slight edge as they took a 25-20 lead into the second quarter. 

 

To start the second quarter, St.Mary's came out playing strong defence and after they got a 31-23 lead, the clippers called a timeout. The moumentum didn't swing their way though, as St. Mary's extended their lead to 16, and when up 50-34, St.Mary's took a timeout. Foul trouble affected the Clippers late and they went into halftime trailing 55-38.

 

Coming out to start the second half, the lightning extended their lead to 23 points. Briercrest cut the deficit down to 16, however St.Mary's finished the quarter strong and took a 21-point lead into the fourth, up 75-54.

 

In the final quarter, the teams came out trading baskets and with the score at 78-61 St.Mary's called a timeout. Out of the timeout, the Clippers kept up their push and cut the lead down to 15. Strong team defence and solid shooting by St.Mary's #14 Emily Wagner proved to be too much for Briercrest as St.Mary's closed out the game strong and continued to extend their lead. Taking this matchup by a score of 96-67.

 

Presenting the player of the game awards was Tara Martens, for Briercrest, the player of the game was #23 Angenay Williams with 24 Points, 9 Rebounds and 6 Steals. For St. Mary's, the award went to #11 Hannah Helton who had 31 Points and 5 Rebounds.  

 

After the game, #23 Angenay Williams of Briercrest had this to say: "The game was pretty tough for us, but we're gonna focus on tomorrow and just readjust some of our gameplan. St.Mary's is a tough team, but were gonna readjust and get things together".   

 

The Clippers are back in action tomorrow, with the women playing at 1pm and the men at 3pm.
