WBB | Clippers Upset Kodiaks Home Opener
Oct. 19, 2019 - Lethbridge College Kodiaks opened their season at home hosting the Briercrest Clippers. With the bulk of the Kodiaks team being made up of rookies, head coach Deanna Simpson was confident her players would come out looking to prove what they were capable of.
Briercrest started the game with high intensity, eager to take control. Fifth year Angenay Williams opened up the first half with 14 points while her teammate Brooklyn Martens was quick to receive 12 rebounds, together these two were a force on the court.
By no means was Lethbridge making this an easy feat for the Clippers as they created plenty of scoring opportunities. Unfortunately, the Kodiaks had several unlucky bounces around the net.
Lethbridge could not quite close in on the Clippers as they generally maintained a ten point lead throughout the game. Kodiaks second year, Kaylin Larson was a consistent threat for the Clippers as she earned player of the game, however, she could not lift her team's spirits to overtake Briercrest. Larson played a smart and dependable game.
The game began to slightly shift in the third quarter as the Kodiaks looked like they may close the gap between the score however the Clippers maintained their distance, ending the quarter 50-60.
One of the few veterans of Lethbridge, Matlin McMurray was able to bring some experience to the squad as she managed to acquire 15 points and eight rebounds. Sydney Segroves of Briercrest also put up 15 points.
Now that the Kodiaks have had a taste of a regular season game, the young team will now have a rough idea of the expectations in the ACAC league. Moving forward, Lethbridge will make adjustments to correct some of their downfalls in tonight's home opener.
Lethbridge will hit the road next Friday to take on rivals, the Medicine Hat Rattlers. Following Friday's action, the Kodiaks will return home Saturday evening to host St. Mary's University at 6:00p.m with men to follow.
