4th quarter comeback not enough for Lion
After only scoring 8, 8, and 9 points in the first 3 quarters, something clicked for the squad as the came out in the 4th and put up 23. While this strong 4th quarter was bound to be partially due Kodiaks relaxing and playing some of their bench after building up a 30 point lead, it was still impressive from the Lions to start to put things together near the end of the game. What was a frustrated Lions Head Coach Gerard Brand, turned very positive, as it seemed his game plan was being executed to a tee by his team.
Now this was still much too little too late as from the tip to the final whistle the Kodiaks still controlled play. 30 turnovers by the Lions and missed chances in the paint did not help their cause. Interestingly, the Lions were able to shoot a higher percentage from the field than the Kodiaks, however a strong lead in 3 point percentage by Lethbridge negated any chance of Ambrose being able to upset the 3rd ranked team in the South division. Paige Goertzen had a strong night picking up another double-double (3rd of her shortened season).
On the offensive glass, Lethbridge dominated, picking up 23 rebounds, scoring 15 points off these plays. Together with another 25 points off of turnovers, the Lions were mismatched against a taller, more precise team tonight.
Players of the game were for the Lions – Caitlyn Hetrick (scoring a team high 13) and Karli McLachlan as played a strong overall game (10 points, 4 steals, 3 assists and 2 rebounds)
If Ambrose can string together what they found in the 4th quarter tonight, for the full game tomorrow, the Kodiaks will be forced to play up to their standard to hold off the Lions in what would be sure to be a much closer game.
