Lions Snakebit in Big Loss to Rattlers
The Ambrose Lions Headed south to the Snake Pit to take on the Medicine Hat College Rattlers. The first place Rattlers looked to maintain their place on top as the season entered the final stretch. The game started with the Rattlers showing why they were in first place. With a 3 pointer to open the game followed by 6 points in the paint, the Rattlers were up 9-0 quick. After another basket the and an 11 point lead, the Rattlers earned a trip to the line and forced the lions to take a timeout. Coming out of the timeout, both teams missed on their next trip down the floor. The Lions got to the line and got their first point of the match with 6:50 reading on the clock. The scoring slowed down as the clock passed the midway point with not baskets in almost two minutes, neither team could get shots to fall. The scoring drought was broken but not by much. After the fast start the score at the quarter was 18-3 in favor of the Rattlers.
The second quarter with the Lions getting a pair of second chance points on the offensive board. The Rattlers earned a trip to the line and made one of two. Another Rattler trip to the line and 2 more points extended their lead now 21-5. Their high pressure defense was too much for the Lions who were unable to break down the trap. The Rattlers shooters again went cold in the middle of the frame not hitting shots they usually make. The score had not moved again for 3 minutes as neither team could convert. The Rattlers broke the drought with a Kate Rozdeba layup. They struck again with a trip to the line and increased the lead to 21. The lead continued to increase as the Rattlers were giving up nothing on the defensive end. The half ended with the Rattlers leading 35-9.
The second half needed to be better for the Ambrose lions if they had any hope of making this a close game. The half started with the Rattlers making a back to back steals and baskets. Ambrose was able to respond but the rattlers went down the court and scored again. The Rattlers were simply a better team in all aspects of the game. the lead increased to 32 as the Rattlers were simply too dominant. The lead increased again to 35 as Kendell Kuntz made a 3 point play with a trip to the line. The Rattlers hit the 50 point plateau with Ambrose only at 13. The scoring started to stall again when the Rattlers outside shooting went cold. 2 minutes again went by with no scoring. The Rattlers turned inside to Kate Rozdeba inside to spur their scoring. At the end of the third quarter they continued to pull away leading 56-15.
The fourth quarter started with Medicine Hat's Kendell Kuntz nailing a 3 from the corner. This added to an already big Rattlers lead. Turnovers were Killing the Lions as they were struggling to hold on to the ball in the offensive half. This compounded to the lopsided score. Even up big, the Rattlers continued to pressure and push the ball down the court. As time ticked down the result was inevitable. The only thing left to decide was the final tally. A relatively mundane 4th saw the Rattlers increase their lead while the Lions struggled on both ends of the court. The Rattlers ran out the clock and took the final 72-25.
