WBB | Kodiaks tame Lions
Feb. 10, 2018 – Thirteen turned out to be the Kodiaks lucky number on Saturday night.
The Kodiaks got 13-point contributions from the trio of Jaclyn Heggie, Amy Arbon and Matlin McMurray on their way to a 78-46 win over the Ambrose Lions.
The Kodiaks used strong defence and a noticeable advantage on the glass to pick up their second win in a row over Ambrose. Lethbridge swept the weekend home-and-home series and kept their playoff hopes alive in the process.
A late first quarter push helped the Kodiaks establish themselves early. Five points from Matlin McMuray led the team to a 15-2 run to end the first, giving Lethbridge a 25-12 lead after the opening ten minutes.
Lethbridge then demonstrated some lockdown defence in the second quarter, allowing just six Lions points and forcing five steals in taking a 33-18 lead into the half.
The Kodiaks came out strong in the third and pushed their lead to over thirty, with Madi Gladstone scoring six of her ten points in the frame. Lethbridge then played conservatively in the fourth to secure the victory.
Overall, Lethbridge shot 38% from the field and was 5-12 (41%) from beyond the arc. The Kodiaks outrebounded the Lions 55-28, pulling down a staggering 24 offensive boards.
Caitlyn Hetrick scored ten points to lead Ambrose, while Catarina Dimonekene had nine points for the Lions.
Heggie was named player of the game for the Kodiaks, adding seven rebounds to her 13 points.
Ambrose (1-17) will now host Red Deer next Friday night, while Lethbridge (6-10) will play SAIT on Tuesday in a makeup of their postponed game from last weekend. That game will have a delayed start, with tip-off set for 7 p.m. from the Val Matteotti Gymnasium.
Players of the Game:
