WBB | Broncos complete weekend sweep

Jan. 20, 2018 – Brittney Thibeaux scored a game high 18 points and added eight boards to lead the Olds College Broncos to a 79-69 win over the Lethbridge College Kodiaks on Saturday.

While the Kodiaks were much improved from their performance the previous night, they were once again unable to contain a high-flying Olds offense.

Kristina Bajovic helped the Broncos race out to a 20-11 lead in the first quarter. Bajovic hit six early points and added four assists.

Her teammates Michaela Allen-Gullion and Alice-Fay Pitts also started the game strong, contributing five points each. Amy Berryman lead the Kodiaks with seven points in the first half, adding four rebounds and one assist.

Lethbridge hit just one of their first thirteen shots from the field in allowing Olds to race out to the early advantage. The Kodiaks started to regain their form in the second quarter, however, and trailed Olds by just seven entering half.

Down 39-32 at the intermission, the Kodiaks used an 8-0 run early in the third to draw within two points. Olds was able to regroup and countered with a 15-5 run of their own to take a 60-50 lead into the final quarter.

Lethbridge made numerous attempts to rally in the fourth, but stingy defence from the Broncos managed to keep the Kodiaks at bay.

Olds received double-digit offensive contributions from their entire starting lineup, with Thibeaux, Pitts and Allen-Gullio playing the entire 40 minutes.

The Kodiaks were led offensively by veteran Amy Arbon, who was named their player of the game after knocking down 14 points and eight boards. Matlin McMurray was key to the Kodiaks late rally, scoring eight of her 11 points in the fourth quarter.

The Kodiaks (4-7) will use the week to regroup before a big home-and-home test against second place Medicine Hat next weekend. Lethbridge will host the Saturday evening contest, starting with a 6 p.m. tip-off from the Val Matteotti Gym.
