WBB | Broncos run over Kodiaks
Jan 19, 2018 – Brittney Thibeaux scored a game high 24 points and Michaela Allen-Gullion added 18 as the Olds College Broncos rolled to a 75-42 win over the Lethbridge College Kodiaks on Friday night.
Olds set the tone early, jumping out to a 12-2 lead less than five minutes into the game. Displaying dominant defence and using their speed in transition, the Broncos never let their advantage slip to under double digits the rest of the way.
The story of the game was told in the paint. Lethbridge simply had no answer for Olds down low, as the Kodiaks were outscored by an astounding 52-16 margin in points in the paint.
Thibeaux, who leads the ACAC in points per game by a wide margin, narrowly missed a double-double after bringing down nine boards.
Lethbridge simply seemed out of sync most of the night. Olds forced Lethbridge into 29 turnovers, although many came off passing plays that didn't connect.
Olds enjoyed a 38-19 lead at half, and continued to deploy stingy defence the rest of the way. The Kodiaks were limited to just eight and seven points in the second and third quarters, respectively.
The Broncos, who dressed only seven players, relied upon their starters to play like true thoroughbreds. Each starter saw at least 35 minutes of action, so it will be interesting to see if fatigue is a factor in the Saturday afternoon rematch.
The win advances the Broncos record to 6-4, moving them into a tie for third place in the ACAC south division. The Kodiaks fall to 4-6, meaning tomorrow's rematch is critical if the Kodiaks want to stay in ACAC playoff contention.
Tip-off of the weekend finale from the Val Matteotti Gym is set for 1 p.m.
Kodiak notes: Friday night's game was dubbed "Jr. & Sr. High Appreciation Night," a promotional event put on by the Lethbridge College recruitment team. Local area junior and senior high school students were invited to watch the game free of charge and were treated to a free pre-game BBQ and a pair of Kodiaks "Thunderstix." The crowd was noticeably the largest the Kodiaks have played in front of all season.
Jr. and Sr. High School students were also chosen to compete in the "Halftime Free Throw Challenge" for the opportunity to win a free 2018 Kodiaks Summer Camp experience!
Players of the Game:
Broncos – #6 Michaela Allen-Gullion
Kodiaks – #15 Shayna Mathison
