WBB | Kodiaks Open the Season at Home with a Win
Oct 20, 2017 – Though they enter the year as the defending CCAA National Champions, the Kodiaks women's basketball team begin their 2017-18 season looking to form their own unique identity as a program.
With a new coach and for the large part, a new roster, the team shook off a slow start in their opening game and used a dominating fourth quarter to earn a 76-65 victory over the Briercrest Clippers on Friday night.
The Clippers were full marks in opening a 36-32 lead at the half. Scoring threats Kai Wyatt and Brooke Johnson led the offensive attack for Briercrest all night, each landing 14 points on the evening.
The Kodiaks eventually found their stride in the fourth quarter, however, where they outscored Briercrest 23-11 to take control of the game.
Lethbridge was led offensively by a great rookie debut from point guard Madi Gladstone. With her family in attendance, the fierce first year recruit from Utah led all scorers with 16 points. She was able getting to the free throw line early and often, sinking 14 of 15 attempts from the stripe.
Amy Arbon delivered another solid veteran performance with 8 points and 10 assists, while Courtney Kwasney was a beast off the bench, landing 15 points on 5-11 shooting. Amy Berryman and Shayna Mathison also led the Kodiaks offensive charge, dropping 13 points each.
In a game that featured eight lead changes, the Kodiaks out rebounded the Clippers 54-37 and were more effective at getting to the line, making 32 free throw attempts compared to Briercrest's 21 trips to the stripe.
The Kodiaks will now hit the road for a match with bitter rival Medicine Hat tomorrow night. The upstart Rattlers will be a formidable foe, as they look to build on their impressive ACAC championships performance from last season, where they knocked off NAIT in one of the most memorable ACAC upsets in recent history.
Tip off from Medicine Hat is set for 6 p.m., and the game is available to stream live on ACACTV.
