Queens and Kodiaks claim team banners, while Swartz takes home seven total medals
EDMONTON, AB (March 19, 2023) - With just seven sets of medals left to hand out, day two of the 2023 ACAC Indoor track Championship, presented by the Running Room, was capped off early Sunday afternoon at the University of Alberta Universiade Pavilion.
RDP Queen Jenica Swartz helped her team win the Women's overall title with 81 points while earning a total of seven medals over the weekend, five of them gold, while the Lethbridge Kodiaks won the Men's Team title with 83 points on the weekend, 25 points ahead of the SAIT Trojans.
Starting day two off where she left off the night before, Queen Jenica Swartz picked up her fourth gold medal of the weekend when she crossed the finish line in first place in the Women's 600m run with a time of 1:38.07. Following close behind was Trojan Jasmin Salmon (1:38.80) in second and Emma Derbyshire from the Concordia Thunder in third.
The University of Alberta - Augustana Vikings picked up their first medal in the Men's 600m when Sam Nawrot's time of 1:24.61 claimed him gold while Logan Danyluk and Jonah Hennig from the Kodiaks picked up silver and Bronze, respectively.
Hitting the day's halfway mark, Trojan McKenna Fitzgerald grabbed her second medal of the weekend, first gold, in the Women's 1500m with a time of 4:44.96, setting a new ACAC Championship record previously set in 2014 by GPRC Wolve Jamie Wigmore. Jenica Swartz
Came up just short of her fifth gold of the weekend with a silver medal time of 5:01.29 with Taylor Chamberlin getting bronze.
After setting an ACAC record on Saturday night in the Men's 1000m, Leonard Chesoo picked up another gold in the Men's 1500m, crossing the finish line in 3:56.99 to set a new ACAC Championship record. It was a fast heat as all four top runners, Yahye Jama (Trojans), Keiran Marchand (Trojans), and Cooper Williams (Kodiaks) all beat the previous record of 4:04.01 set by Trojan Matthew Travaglini in 2018.
In the second last race of the championship, RDP Queens swept the weekend women's relays with a gold medal performance in the 4x400m crossing the line with a time of 4:14.71. Swartz, being a member of the relay team hung a seventh medal around her neck, fifth gold, while the SAIT Trojans got silver with a time of 4:20.58 and St. Mary's Lightening finished off the podium with bronze.
The Men's 4x400m Relay closed out the 2023 Championship, getting an important win, the Kodaks earned gold with a time of 3:33.83, while Trojans followed up with a silver medal and Vikings got their second medal of the weekend with a bronze.
The 2023 ACAC Indoor Track women's overall championships go to the RDP Queens finishing the weekend with 81 points overall. In second place, the SAIT Trojans with 64 points, and CUE in third with 46 points. The men's overall champions went to the Lethbridge Kodiaks, finishing with 83 points overall. The SAIT Trojans with 58 points earned second place for the second time in the weekend. Concordia Thunder finished strong with 38 points to win third place overall following suit with the women's team.
