2023 ACAC Men's Volleyball Players of the Year

2023 ACAC Men's Volleyball Players of the Year

Edmonton, AB (February 22, 2023) -

North Player of the Year presented by Volleyball Alberta: Mason Gorski

The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is pleased to announce Mason Gorski of The King’s University ‘Eagles’ has been selected as the 2022-23 ACAC Men’s Volleyball North Player of the Year.

Mason’s dedication to the team and to his studies this year have been amazing to watch.  He has not only stepped up academically, embodying what it truly means to be a student-athlete, but he has also taken his achievements on the court to the next level. Mason is only in his second year of eligibility and has made a name for himself as one of the best setters in the conference. He led the entire ACAC this year with the highest assists/set average as well as breaking the all-time record for assists/set average which was at 9.35, finishing the year at 9.87! Not only is he amazing at moving the ball around, but his aggressive serving and excellent defence makes him a big asset in all parts of the game.

Mason was fortunate this year to be surrounded by a team full of amazing hitters who could score. He also demonstrated his leadership skills helping to run a practice with the team once per week during a lunch hour in order to allow players to get a few more reps. Mason understands the importance of finding ways to let each of these great hitters shine in their own way, which was not an easy task. Yet, you would never think twice about it watching Mason get assist after assist no matter who he decided to set.

“I asked Mason after one of our games, what his decision process is for who he sets and why, he replied saying that he decides once the ball is pretty much in his hands. As his coach I can always see him looking around for matchups, who is where, and who is on top of their game; In my opinion this is the true mark of a great setter. Mason is very situationally aware and with his ability to put the ball in precise locations, he is not a setter that comes around very often.” – Coach Ryan Teliske

Mason is in his 3rd year of a Bachelor of Commerce at The King’s University coming from Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan. Mason was also a top setter in his age group in Saskatchewan, setting for his provincial team. He received rookie of the year last season in the ACAC and helped take his team to a 4th place finish. With his skills and previous accomplishments, it is no shock that he is now being recognized as a top player and not just a top setter.

Congratulations Mason Gorski on earning the ACAC North Player of the Year award.

This prestigious award will be recognized at the 2023 ACAC Men’s Volleyball Championship hosted by Keyano College in Fort McMurray, AB.

South Player of the Year presented by Volleyball Alberta: Maddux Greves

The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) and the Red Deer Polytechnic is pleased to announce Maddux Greves of the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings has been selected as the 2022-23 ACAC Men’s Volleyball Player of the Year.

In his final year of post-secondary volleyball, setter Maddux Greves had an incredible year for the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings and was a huge asset setting up the offense for his team as well as picking up the odd dig. Night in, night out, Greves was called upon to run an efficient offense which saw the Kings place second in the conference with a total of 794 kills. The Business Administration student contributed 548 assists, 93 digs and 30 kills in 17 matches played which was instrumental in the Kings finishing first in the South Division with a 17-2 record. This regular season saw RDP win 14 straight matches.

Head Coach Aaron Schulha explained his volleyball skills are evident every night at practice and on game day. But it is his passion and his love for the game that really goes unnoticed.

“His passion, excitement and the way he plays make it very enjoyable for the fans to watch Kings volleyball. I think his volleyball IQ, his love for the game and the way he comes to get better every day are some of the things we are going to miss next year, excluding his skill set obviously. He is one of the top setters and can be one of the top servers in the country.”

Before coming to Red Deer, he spent a season in British Columbia with the Trinity Western University Spartans, and two years with the SAIT Trojans out of Calgary, where he is from. Greves is enrolled in the Business Administration General program and will be graduating from the Polytechnic at the end of the academic year. He will move on to continue his volleyball career professionally somewhere in Europe. The Kings first match of the championships will be against the Lakeland College Rustlers on Thursday, February 22. The Polytechnic won the only meeting between these two teams during the regular season in Lloydminster back on November 19.

This prestigious award will be recognized at the 2023 ACAC Men’s Volleyball Championship hosted by Keyano College in Fort McMurray, AB.
