The Kings continue their winning ways as they tame the Lions

Red Deer, January 20, 2023 – The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings Volleyball squad came into this match against the Ambrose University Lions on a hot streak as they have won nine in a row going back to the first weekend of the 2022-2023 season when they were defeated by the Briercrest College Clippers.

During the second match on the night of the Make Some Noise for Mental Health event, the loudness continued as the Kings were putting on a show offensively. The fans were making it quite loud not just for their home Kings but also for mental health. But the Lions stayed in it and were putting up quite a fight until RDP exploded to a four-point lead heading into a Lions timeout. Outside-hitter Nicolas Possingham (Bachelor of Arts in Psychology) was able to kill it for the 25th point and take the first set 25-19.

Outside-hitter Colby Nemeth was on his serving game as he was getting that wicked top spin down and got the Lions offense off their game for the time being. The Kings were able to cruise to a 25-19 victory over the visiting team, putting the Lions in a win-or-go-home situation.

The third set was definitely the closest of the three as it was a back-and-forth battle with no team breaking and the biggest point differential being just two throughout the first half of the set. As soon as the Lions took a two-point lead late in the second set, Head Coach Aaron Schulha called a timeout of his own just to regroup his team. In the end, the Kings battled back from down a couple of points near the end and walked away with a three-set victory after winning 27-25 in the final game of the match.

The Lions player of the game went to right-side Noah Verhoef, who finished with nine kills and four digs. For the Kings, the honour went to veteran setter Maddux Greves who completed his night with 38 assists.

These two teams will be back at it in Calgary tomorrow evening following the Queens match at Ambrose University.
