Clippers Sweep Augustana in Entertaining Match
by Jeff Misener
The Briercrest Clippers (5-5, t-4th in South Division) faced their North Division rivals from University of Alberta Augustana, a squad looking for its first match victory in the 2022-23 season. A Clippers' victory today would inch them closer to the division leaders in advance of three weekends of critical games against South Division opponents.
Augustana outside hitter Boris Kuljanin spun a pair of aces to open the action, while Clippers' setter Jeremy Martens featured Karym Coleman, Judah Matthies, and Noah Dirsten in the early stages. Potent attacking from Kuljanin and sturdy defense from Jake Christenson kept the Vikings even with the hosts before Matthies ripped a sextet of serves to vault his squad to a 15- 13 lead. Augustana setter Calder Thompson featured his blocking prowess, rejecting Matthies and Coleman late in the set, but Darnell Bergen subbed in for Matthies to serve out the set, 25- 21.
The teams traded early offense, highlighted by a Davis Borden kill down the middle. Parker Bloom's ace was nullified by Kuljanin's thunderous kill. Martens, Matthies, and Dirsten served the hosts to a healthy advantage, but Augustana's Devon Nazarchuk pounded a pair of kills to keep things tight. The Clippers opened a tight game, relying on the stellar defense of substitute Luke Bloom, dynamic serving of Borden and Martens' heady distribution of the ball, to win set two, 25-15.
Christensen enjoyed some early success in set three with a couple of kills in the middle, and an ace from Vikings' Jonah Vander Leek pushed his team to a 7-4 lead, but Coleman served and spiked his squad even. Parker Bloom baffled the Augustana receivers on serve as Briercrest flipped the deficit. Some feisty and frenetic play from Augustana was cancelled by Dirsten, who had three mammoth kills and a block down the stretch. Augustana showed great resilience and fight throughout the set, but Coleman's power and Dirsten's finishing block gave the hosts a 25- 20 win.
Players of the Game for Augustana was Calder Thompson, who contributed five digs, 15 assists, and two blocks. Judah Matthies starred for the Clippers, as evidenced by his seven aces, five kills, and four digs.
