Briercrest Men Tame Ambrose Lions in Four Entertaining Sets
The Briercrest men's volleyball team looked to defend home court against the undefeated Ambrose Lions, early leaders in the ACAC South Division. Coming off a split of matches last weekend against Red Deer, the Clippers were eager to continue their winning ways.
2021-22 CCAA All-Canadian Karym Coleman displayed fine early form for Briercrest, notching four kills, and Tyson Nachtigall's strong serving pushed the home squad to a 12-7 lead. Clippers' setter Jeremy Martens involved all his hitters to good effect. Briercrest claimed the opening game, 25-14, on a Davis Borden kill.
Both teams began set two aggressively defending their net space. Martens featured Nachtigall on a sweet middle kill, only to be matched by Ambrose's setter Emmitt Juul-Hansen's assist to Isaac Karstad. Ambrose's Nikita Marchenkov kept his team in the match with tough hitting and timely serving. In the end, Briercrest rode Jeremy Martens' potent serve and clever setting to the second set victory, 25-14.
Ambrose quickly stamped their authority on the third game, thanks to an ace from Karstad, kills from Matthew Clements and Noah Verhoef, a sublime tip from Marchenkov, and a stuff block from Cole Giesbrecht. Marchenkov won a big net battle against Coleman to give the Lions a 22- 19 edge, and finished the set with a thunderous serve, allowing the visitors to take the set 25- 20.
Marchenkov and Coleman traded kills early in set four as the teams fought for control. A Coleman stuff block and a pair of aces from Judah Matthies pushed the Clipper lead to 9-6. JuulHansen continued to feed his outside hitters with great success. Defensive miscues by the Clippers allowed Ambrose to even the score, but Tyson Nachtigall's authoritative net presence on offense and defense kept Briercrest in front. Ambrose's Isaac Karstad thumped a ball on an unblocked middle attack, but the Clippers rode Davis Borden's left side power and Karym Coleman's clutch serving to a 25-19 decision in set four.
For Ambrose, Nikita Marchenkov, the 4th year Business Administration student from Perth, Australia, had 6 digs and 10 kills to earn Player of the Game honours. Karym Coleman secured the award for Briercrest with 19 kills, 4 aces and 4 digs.
