The Keyano Huskies men's soccer team endured a tough result Saturday in their final home game of the regular season, taking a 4-2 loss at the hands of the Lakeland Rustlers.
"I thought we could've done way better," said winger Caleb Kehler. "We didn't get the result we wanted and did not play at our best at all.
"We know we're a better team than that and it's just disappointing."
The Huskies burst out of the gate quickly with a goal by Tom Wessel in the fourth minute. However, Samuel Dosumu-Hathrobe answered back for the Rustlers a minute later to even the score.
"I think we got the result that we deserved," said head coach Niels Slotboom. "We played good for about 10 minutes and we were up 1-0 and then we shut off.
"We didn't really do what we are supposed to do. We didn't play at the level that we are capable of. It's a solid team we played against and they made us pay for it. We got what we deserved."
Hani Tekheste tallied the first hat trick of his Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) career in the win, scoring in the 56th, 66th, and 84th minutes of play to provide the difference.
The Huskies gained a goal back in extra time thanks to the foot of Dashawn Kennedy, but it came too late to build any effective momentum in turning the tide in the contest.
"I think we got too confident," added Kehler. "We started playing their game for the first five, we played ours and that's when the goal happened.
"We just let them play their game and that's when they took advantage and that's why we lost."
McMurrayite and goalkeeper Corbin Cyprien started his first ever ACAC game in the defeat.
The Huskies are on the road Sunday, taking on the NAIT Ooks in Edmonton. Kick-off is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
