MSOC | Two late goals spoil Kodiaks home opener

MSOC | Two late goals spoil Kodiaks home opener

Sept. 8, 2018 – What looked like a sure three points quickly evaporated into nothing for the Kodiaks men's soccer team.

A pair of SAIT Trojans goals in the dying minutes of the match spoiled the Kodiaks home opener, as they dropped a heartbreaking 3-2 decision.

With his team down 2-1, SAIT's Brad Atherton put his team on his shoulders. Atherton headed one past Kodiaks goalkeeper Kohl Wandyka in the 89th minute, drilling home the equalizer off a well-placed free kick from well beyond the box.

With the Kodiaks on their heels, Atherton then secured the dramatic comeback in extra time with another goal off a header, this time off a Trojans corner.

The late goals spoiled what was a mostly solid performance from the home side.

In front of a raucous crowd, the Kodiaks went up 1-0 in the 41st minute on a penalty kick goal from Wilson Ntignee.

After finishing last season second in conference scoring, Ntignee picked up where he left off by drawing a penalty just as he entered inside the penalty area. Trojan goalkeeper Marko Ilich dove right and got a piece of the shot, but not enough to keep it out.

The Trojans briefly tied the game at two off a nice header goal from Daniel Arevalo in the 52nd minute, before Jimmy Bukuru put the Kodiaks back in front two minutes later by burying a mad scramble in front

The Kodiaks will head to Olds tomorrow, looking to regroup with a match against the Olds College Broncos.

The Trojans will head back to Calgary for their home opener against Medicine Hat College.
