ACAC South Regional Men's Futsal Tournament 2 Recap
Olds, AB - The Olds College Broncos hosted the second South Regional Tournament of the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Futsal season this past weekend. Six schools participated, including the host Olds College Broncos, Red Deer Polytechnic Kings and Queens, SAIT Trojans, Ambrose University Lions, Lethbridge Polytechnic Kodiaks and the Medicine Hat College Rattlers. All teams arrived with intensity, as they were all legitimate contenders at the start of the tournament to finish well enough within regular season standings to make it to the ACAC Futsal Championship in Lakeland, Alta.
"Overall, there were some great Futsal performances this weekend," says Allan Siwela, Olds College Broncos Futsal coach. "On the men's side, it stayed fiercely competitive until the end. Every game had an impact on the final results and it took until the final two games on the last day of the tournament to determine who would be the top three teams continuing to the championship out of the top four in the South."
All teams showed tremendous effort over the weekend. The Medicine Hat College Rattlers maintained their spot at the top of the standings, finishing just two points ahead of the second-place team. Red Deer Polytechnic had a slower start on Saturday but had strong performances on Sunday to keep them at the second rank in the standings. The Olds College Broncos didn't lose a game on their home court but had to battle back from multiple four-point deficits to tie the score, and their resilience paid off as it secured their third-place finish in the standings.
Ambrose University had some big moments of success over the weekend, including three wins and one tie game, but their second tournament success left them shy of a playoff spot, finishing one point behind Olds College in the standings. Lethbridge Kodiaks and SAIT were unable to gain enough momentum to swing them to the top of the standings.
