The Kings shutout another opponent, Weersink earns second consecutive shutout
Red Deer, February 24, 2023 – Goaltender Arik Weersink and the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings picked up another shutout victory, making it back-to-back for the veteran goalie as they defeated the Concordia University Thunder 4-0.
Weersink shutout the NAIT Ooks last weekend 4-0.
Forward Jacob Kendall (Bachelor of Education) would open the scoring on the powerplay at 12:24 for his 15th goal on the season. Forward Jaxon Steele and Erik Miller were awarded the assists on the Kings first goal of the game.
The Kings outshot the Thunder 14-7 in the first period and would start the second with 22 seconds left on a powerplay.
With 29 seconds to go, RDP would finally open up the second-period scoring with another powerplay goal. Forward Nolan Doell (Bachelor of Education) picked up the puck in the slot where he would sneak it past the Thunder goaltender to extend the Kings lead to two goals.
The Kings doubled the Thunder in shots as they outshot their opponent 26-13 and would yet again start a period on a powerplay with 1:31 left on a Concordia penalty.
The Thunder would not only kill off this penalty but another penalty right after the first one finished.
The Kings would add an empty netter from Dylan Esau (Business Diploma) and a goal off a one-timer from the blue-line from defense Layne Toder (Management Certificate Skywing) to cap off a 23-save shutout for goaltender Arik Weersink (Business Administration), who now has back-to-back shutouts and player of the game awards.
With this win tonight, the Kings now are riding a seven-game winning streak.
Both goaltenders were awarded the player of the game. Goaltender Griffin Bowerman faced 38 shots and stopped 34 of them in the loss.
These two teams will head to Edmonton for a rematch tomorrow night at 7 pm in the finale of the men's hockey regular season.
