Thunder Lose Game One In Heartbreaking Fashion

EDMONTON, AB (March 11, 2022) – The Concordia University of Edmonton (CUE) Thunder opened their 2022 playoffs Friday night as they welcomed the Augustana Vikings in game one of their Semi-Final series. A tight matchup, the Vikings rallied from two down to take the game to overtime, where they were able to clinch just before the end of the first overtime.

The Thunder opened the scoring early, #7 Keegan Tiringer buried his first of the playoffs less than 90 seconds into the opening frame. Both teams found their defensive grooves after that, as neither team was able to breakthrough again for the rest of the period. Vikings goalie Daniel Moody kept things close, as he made 11 saves on 12 shots to prevent the Thunder from extending their lead. The second period saw teams open things up, as the Thunder outshot the Vikings 17-15, with both goalies putting on a show. CUE was able to break through for the second time early in the second period as #3 Seth Summers was able to nail a one-timer from Tristan Gagnon to double their lead to two. But the Vikings were able to break through later in the period, as #25 Owen Lamb cut the Thunder lead in half.

The third period returned to the defensive chess match that the first period was – with both teams exchanges opportunities while displaying their defensive abilities. With less than 10 minutes left, Jordan Mish took advantage of a strong forecheck to tie the game up. The 2-2 scoreline stood for the rest of regulation as Game One headed to overtime to decide a winner. An exhausting effort from both teams, chances were exchanged and both goalies made incredible saves to keep their teams in it. Ultimately it was Augustana that was able to find the winner, as Zach Cox ended things just before the end of the first overtime.

The One Team Sports Players of the Game were #24 Peyton Gorski for Augustana, and #13 Tristan Gagnon for the Thunder.

Game two of the three game series goes Saturday afternoon in Camrose, as the Thunder look to avoid the sweep and extend their season. If a game three is needed on Sunday, the Thunder will welcome back the Vikings.
