Vikings fall to kings in marathon match-up

CAMROSE, AB - In a hard-fought game, the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings got the better of the Augustana Vikings winning 5-4 in double overtime, Friday night at Encana Arena.

With the win, the Kings improve their win streak to three games. Meanwhile, the Vikings continue their impressive stretch, picking up points in seven of their last nine games.

The Kings found offense from Jacob Kendall who had two goals on the night, while Tucker Scantlebury, Matt Lapointe, and Chance Longjohn all netted a goal. Nettminder Kristian Lyon had 41 saves in the win.

Across the ice, Jake Gudjonson and Tanner Manz both found the back of the net twice, while Jordan Mish and Jase Smalcel had two assists each. Rett Rook backstopped the Vikings with 38 saves on the night.

Taking over seven minutes to open the scoring, Scantlebury got the Kings on the board to take the first lead of the game, but it would not last long as the Vikings would two goals before the end of the frame to take their first lead, 2-1.

Evening the score early, the Kandall would find the back of the net, beating Rook to draw the score even one minute and eleven seconds into the second period, before the Vikings would add their third goal of the game to take back the lead minutes later.

Not wasting any time, the Kings scored one minute and 23 seconds into the third period before adding another 49 seconds later to take back the lead, 4-3. Two minutes and four seconds later Manz shot would even the score once again, ultimately sending the game into overtime.

One period of overtime would not do it as both teams would be forced to play a second. Doing what the Kings have done all night, Lapointe's shot from the point found its way past Rook and into the back of the net, sealing the deal 55 second into the second overtime.

Looking ahead, both teams will take to the ice in Red Deer as they close out the season tomorrow night at 7:00 pm. Catch all the action an ACACtv.
