CALGARY, ALTA., (Feb. 12, 2022) - Despite a third period surge from their opponents, the SAIT Trojans men's hockey team picked up the win.
The Trojans defeated the visiting University of Alberta-Augustana Vikings 5-2 on Saturday night in their Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) battle held at SAIT's Campus Centre. In the final 20 minutes of play, two quick power play goals by the Vikings cut the lead to 3-2 before SAIT iced the victory with two all-important insurance markers.
SAIT moves to 5-5-0-1 on the season, while Augustana falls to 4-5-1-0.
The Trojans were spotted a 3-0 lead after two periods of play with goals from Joren Patenaude, Kurtis Rutledge and Cam McAdam. Forward Rock Ruschkowski assisted on all three goals to be named his team's Player of the Game.
In the final period, the Vikings were able to claw their way back into the game just six minutes in when Quintin Sudom and Owen Lamb scored power play goals just 20 seconds apart to cut the lead to 1.
SAIT was able to weather the storm until McKenzie Welke scored to regain a two-goal lead. Patenaude scored his second of the contest with just over two minutes left to round out the scoring.
Sudom earned Player of the Game honours for the visitors.
The Trojans return to action next weekend with a home-and-home series against the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings - Friday night at SAIT, Saturday night at Red Deer.
