NAIT Sweeps Portage

LAC LA BICHE – It was modern-day David versus Goliath. And while the end result was different than the biblical story, David put up a heck of a fight.

The Portage College Voyageurs faced off against the league-leading NAIT Ooks at the Bold Center Saturday night and played one of their best games of the season. Trailing 2-0 after the first period, the home squad regrouped and pulled together outstanding effort, outshooting NAIT 22-18 over the final 40 minutes before eventually succumbing 4-1 to their more experienced visitors. NAIT sharpshooter Jared Legien led the way once again for his team, notching two goals while Jake Mykitiuk added three helpers.

"It was a great game by our hockey team," said Associate Coach Kevin McClelland. "NAIT's record speaks for itself. We gave them a really good game. Our work ethic was unbelievable."

Voyageurs Player of the Game Jordan Picard epitomized the team's effort, blocking shots, skating miles and checking hard. Cole Keenleyside, who played a great game as well, could be forgiven if he has nightmares about NAIT goalie Jordan Papirny. The Voyageurs forward had five breakaways during the game – including three in a short few minutes in the second period – but was unable to beat the backstopper.

"It's too bad we couldn't score on a few of our chances," said McClelland. "Honestly, from watching tonight's game, you'd never know that we hadn't won a hockey game yet this year. The guys played their hearts out. You can't fault their work ethic!"
