Augustana Wins in Double Overtime
Camrose, AB - Max McLean arena was full of fans for the Augustana's team home opener over Thanksgiving weekend, to cheer on the Augustana Vikings as they took on the visiting Concordia Thunder. During the game the the Vikings hosted a garage sale, selling much of the Viking's alumni memorabilia while having a complimentary dinner included in tonight's game day ticket and catered by FLO Enterprises.
Vikings was first to put a goal up on the scoreboard, scored by Groom assisted by Danczak and Sheehan. Concordia was quick to follow scoring their first goal of the period nearly a minute afterwards by Sowa, assisted by Benko (who also achieved payer of the game) and Wheeldon. Sheehan closed out the first period with a goal for the vikings assisted by Osczeuski and McMullin. The second period followed with Augustana fighting to stay in the lead, however Benko, of the Concordia Thunder tied up the game halfway through the second which was assisted by Wheeldon and Dillon. The Teams entered the third period tied at 2, Augustana started of strong getting a goal merely four minutes into the third, scored by Gunville assisted by Young and Lousin. Augustana maintained the lead for nearly the entire third, but Concordia was determined to not go out without a fight, tying the score 3-3 with minutes left in the third.
The team's gave the fans their money's worth going into double over-time, keeping fans on the edge their seats. Both teams played their fullest, each having multiple game winning opportunities as fans held their breath at each shot on goal. Biench of the Augustana Vikings stole the puck, passing to Sproule who in turn gave it to Gunville who skated down and scored the game winning goal against the Thunder. The remaining players of the Vikings stormed the ice and cheered as the victors of their home opening game.
