2023 ACAC Men's Basketball Players of the Year
Edmonton, AB (March 1, 2023) -
North Player of the Year presented by Vereburn Medical Supply: Sean-Michael Clancey
The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is pleased to announce that Sean Michael Clancey of the Keyano College Huskies has been selected as the 2022-2023 ACAC Men’s Basketball North Division Player of the Year.
The honours marks back-to-back North Division Player of the Year honours for Clancey and the first two-time winner from the Men’s Basketball Huskies. Before last year, Zach Alger-Waldher was the only Huskies Men’s Basketball student-athlete to also capture the honour.
Starting in all 20 of his team’s games this season, Clancey averaged 23.4 points per game for the Huskies, also averaging 6.8 rebounds, 4.7 assists, and 3.0 steals on a per game basis. That translated to 467 points scored, 136 rebounds, 94 assists, 60 steals, and three blocks during the regular season.
His Huskies enter the 2023 ACAC Men’s Basketball Championship as the top-seeded team in the North Division.
He reached double-digits in all 20 games this season, scoring a season-high 40 points on February 17, 2023 at home in an 82-75 win against the Lethbridge College Kodiaks. He recorded five double-doubles this season, posting double-digit rebounds including season-high totals on November 4, 2022 and January 28, 2023.
In scoring 467 points, he led the ACAC’s North Division in scoring for a third straight season.
“Sean is a very special player and even better person off the floor,” said Jeremy Wielenga, Head Coach of the Keyano Huskies Men’s Basketball team. “We are very grateful for everything he has done for our program on and off the floor and he is very deserving of this honour once again.”
A product of Las Vegas, Nevada and St. Louis, Missouri, Clancey has built an impressive resume in his three seasons in the ACAC.
To date, he’s twice been recognized as an All-Canadian by the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), been named to the ACAC’s First All-Conference Tam in North Division for all three seasons, earned an ACAC Silver Medal and has served as the driving force in back-to-back perfect seasons for the Men’s Basketball Huskies.
Scoring 1,442 points in 58 ACAC Regular Season games and recording 166 steals, Clancey stands with the conference’s top 10 all-time leaders in both statistical categories. His 231 career assists rank strongly as well among the ACAC’s all-time greats.
In his fifth year of eligibility, Clancey is currently studying Business at Keyano College.
This prestigious award will be recognized at the 2023 ACAC Men’s Basketball Championship hosted by Ambrose University in Calgary, Alberta.
South Player of the Year presented by Vereburn Medical Supply: Marcus Masters
The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is pleased to announce that Marcus Masters of the SAIT Trojans has been selected as the 2022-2023 ACAC Men’s Basketball South Division Player of the Year.
The third-year guard from Kitchener, Ont., had a tremendous year for the Trojans, leading them to a second-place finish in the ACAC’s South Division (14-7) despite starting the season 1-4. Masters becomes the first SAIT men’s basketball player to earn the honour since John Smith did so in the 2018-19 season.
“He led the country in scoring for most of the year, but more importantly, pulled us through when we really needed him early in the season,” said Marty Birky, head coach of the SAIT Trojans. “He’s a man of few words, choosing to let his game do all the talking needed. . . it’s been amazing to coach him and watch the year that he’s had.”
Masters scored 522 points (24.9 points per game average) to become just the third Trojans men’s basketball player to break the 500-pt mark in a season, joining Trojan greats Eddie Richardson III (568) and Smith (502). A substantial chunk of his 522 points came from behind the three-point line, where his 72 shots made from beyond the arc led the ACAC.
Just as impressive was his work at the free throw line. His 110 shots made from the charity stripe eclipsed a near 50-year-old school record, surpassing Ed Dick’s mark of 106 made in the 1975-76 season.
“When he misses a free throw, it’s a surprise to everyone in the gym,” joked Birky.
The Open Studies student at SAIT scored 30 or more points in seven games this season, and 20 or more in 16 games. Birky pointed out that Masters was able to accomplish that despite being tasked with defending the opposing team’s best guard night in and night out.
“What goes unnoticed is how good of a defender Marcus is,” Birky explained. “And that’s unique for someone who scores at the level he does – he takes on the biggest challenge defensively while still leading us on offense.”
This prestigious award will be recognized at the 2023 ACAC Men’s Basketball Championship hosted by Ambrose University in Calgary, Alberta.
