Lightning Men win over Broncos on Senior Night

It was bitter sweet night for the St. Mary's University Men's Basketball prgram. Prior to the game, Nathan Ruff (Head Coach) had given an emotional speech on his graduating 5th year athlete Cordell Minnifee. He had made history by being the 1st male St. Mary's athlete to complete 5 years of eligiblity.

However there was a game in hand with rival Olds College Broncos. From the tip off both teams were looking for a better game to improve their season records. First quarter was a see saw battle with both teams scoring 20 points each. Broncos had 6 players contributing points, leading the way was Karen Gill with 9 points (3-3 pointers). Lightning had scoring from their 6 players. Leading the way was Issac Amsing with 6 points.

2nd quarter was a win for the Lightning Men. Amsing continued his scoring pace and got some rebounding help from John Paul Okoduo and Josh Matosevic. Linden Jackson for Olds had 8 points. St. Mary's had taken an 9 point lead into half time break. 

Coach Mike Stevens (Olds) had to make some changes in the 3rd quarter. Even though they were trailing by 7 , there were signs that Broncos were making some in roads in the defensive minded Lightning. Broncos had scoring from Jackson (6 points) and Terrance Crisostomo (6 points). Lightning had contributions from Amsing (5 points) and Matosevic (6 points) . St Mary's 63 Olds 56 after 3 quarters.

4th quarter was a even. Both teams were creating turnovers and their start players were still making plays for their persepective teams. The nine point lead that St. Mary's had after 2 quarters was the end result of the final score 88-79. Jackson had scored 10 points and Amsing had 10 points.

St. Mary's University (6-13) continue their weekend series at Olds College (5-13). Game time 8pm Ralph Klein Centre February 16th.
