MBB | Kings secure sweep of Kodiaks

Jan. 13, 2018 – Daniel Powell broke out for 25 points and a double-double to help lead the Red Deer Kings to a 90-83 win over the Lethbridge College Kodiaks on Saturday afternoon.

Following the same script as their win the previous night, the Kings raced out to an early lead, let the Kodiaks back in the game, then broke out in the fourth quarter to secure the win.

Red Deer took a 47-42 lead into the half but let it slip away in the third, when Lethbridge's Daniel Lybbert hit a trio of three-pointers to give the Kodiaks a one-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.

The Kings were able to regroup in the fourth, using their advantage on the glass to build an advantage the Kodiaks couldn't overcome. Red Deer outrebounded Lethbridge 16-6 in the final frame and won the quarter 22-14 to secure the weekend sweep.
Powell hit eight of his points in the fourth and was a beast on the glass, collecting 17 rebounds on the night.

Once again Lethbridge was unable to find their shooting touch, hitting on under 40% of their field goals. Keanu Funa led the Kodiaks with 23 points off the bench, while Cory Richardson chipped in 14 points and eight assists.

The win moves Red Deer (5-4) one game ahead of Lethbridge (4-5) in the ACAC south division standings.

Red Deer will return home to face Briercrest next weekend, while the Kodiaks will now prepare for two critical home games next weekend against an upstart Olds College Broncos. The Broncos entered Saturday's action with the same record as Lethbridge and will prove to be another tough challenge for the Kodiaks.

Tip-off from the Val Matteotti Gym on Friday, Jan. 19 will be 8 p.m., followed by a matinee game at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
