Andrew Jones Honoured as recipient of the 2018-19 ACAC Charles Morter Award

Edmonton, AB (February 25, 2019) - The Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) is pleased to announce Andrew Jones of the Red Deer College King's has been selected as the 2018-19 ACAC Charles Morter Award recipient. Andrew Jones is in his third year on the RDC Curling team.

Jones has won two ACAC silver medals as part of the RDC Mixed team and RDC Men's team. He is currently curling with the RDC men who are headed to the ACAC Championships in Olds. Andrew is the chairperson of the RDC Student-Athlete Advisory Council and is the student-athlete's representative on the RDC Scholarship Breakfast Advisory Committee which is the major fundraiser for athletic scholarships.

This is the second year in a row that Andrew has taken a lead role in the planning and execution of the student-athlete support functions for this event. Due to Andrew's advocacy, our guest speaker at this event is a curler for the first time. Andrew also gives back to the curling community in a big way. He is coaching the high school curling teams in his home town of Ponoka and was an instructor for the Adult Learn to Curl in Red Deer.

Andrew is also a great teammate. He was moved from second to skip for the Winter Regional and has worked hard on the strategy part of the game and has thrown a ton of rocks to get comfortable throwing skip rocks. He has a great attitude and is always a positive influence on the rest of the team, encouraging them to attend workouts and extra practices.

Andrew is a Residence Assistant which came with extra responsibilities this year due to the fact that our students had to move out of residence for the Canada Winter Games; as such, he spent a sleepless weekend helping many students move to the Olds Residence. Andrew is very personable, responsible and dependable young man, making him an invaluable member of our team, college and community, thus is an excellent candidate for this award.

This prestigious award was presented to Jones at the 2019 ACAC Curling Championship held at the end of February at Olds College.
